What to expect during your prenatal visits:

A typical prenatal course starts with a complete history and physical exam, as well as blood work and an ultrasound to confirm the expected due date.

There is optional testing available for screening:

  • HarmonyTM Prenatal Test is a non-invasive test that detects fetal trisomies 21, 18, and 13 in pregnancies of 10 weeks or more.  The test analyzes cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in maternal blood and provides a risk assessment for pregnant women with singleton pregnancies.
  • Screening for Neural tube defect (incomplete closure of the fetal spine that can result in spina bifida or anencephaly).  The best time to draw is between 16-18 weeks, although available from 15-23 weeks
  • Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive, multisystem disease that primarily impacts the lungs, pancreas, and the digestive tract. Because CF is caused by an inherited genetic mutation, carrier screening is recommended to identify couples at risk for having a child with the disease CF screening is available for all individuals who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy to determine if either parent is a carrier of CF. This test is a blood test and only necessary once in your life.

A complete anatomic survey is performed between 18 and 22 weeks gestation. Screening for gestational diabetes mellitus, iron-deficiency anemia, hiv, and syphilis is done between 24 and 28 weeks gestation. If the glucose screening test is within normal limits, no additional evaluation is necessary. However, if the glucose screen is elevated, a three-hour glucose tolerance test is performed at the patient’s earliest convenience in office. An optional ultrasound is offered between 28 and 30 weeks gestation to patients for a three dimensional image of the fetus. Finally, a vaginal culture is obtained between 35 and 37 gestational weeks for group B strep.
